Bookmark Snapper
📸 Free · open source · runs on your computer

Every bookmark, captured forever.

Tweets get edited, deleted and locked. Bookmark Snapper takes a picture of every tweet you and your friends bookmark on X, the moment you tap Bookmark.

The Bookmark Snapper gallery showing screenshots of tweets bookmarked by Maya, Priya and Leo, with a box to paste a tweet link.
How it works

Set up in about two minutes.

Snapper has two small parts: an app that runs on your computer and keeps the screenshots, and a Chrome extension that tells it when you bookmark something.

1

Start Snapper

You need Node.js 22.2 or newer and Google Chrome. Paste this into Terminal:

Terminal
git clone https://github.com/saphid/bookmark-snapper
cd bookmark-snapper
npm install
npm start
2

Add the extension

  1. Download it and unzip
  2. Open the address below and turn on Developer mode
  3. Click Load unpacked and pick the unzipped folder
chrome://extensions
3

Bookmark as usual

Open the extension's Options and type your name. Then just bookmark tweets on x.com. Each one shows up in your gallery a few seconds later.

Why Snapper

Small, private, and out of your way.

No accounts, no API keys, no cloud. Just a picture of every tweet you meant to come back to.

Instant

The screenshot is taken the moment you tap Bookmark, before the tweet can be edited or deleted.

Friends too

Each friend installs the extension and picks a name. Filter the gallery by person to see what everyone saved.

Phone bookmarks

On your phone? Copy the tweet link and paste it into the gallery. It's captured the same way.

Private by design

Screenshots are saved as plain image files on your own computer. Nothing is uploaded anywhere.

Nothing to sign in to

No X login, developer account or API key. Snapper captures the tweet's public embed.

A gallery that keeps up

New captures appear live. Click any one to view it full size, download it, or jump back to the tweet.

FAQ

Questions

Can Snapper see what my friends bookmark without them installing anything?
No. X keeps bookmarks private, so nobody's bookmarks can be read without their consent. Each person who wants to share installs the extension, which only reports the bookmarks they make.
Where are the screenshots stored?
In the data/shots folder inside the Snapper folder on your computer, as ordinary PNG files. A list of every bookmark is kept in data/bookmarks.jsonl.
Does it work with the X app on my phone?
The automatic part needs desktop Chrome. For phone bookmarks, share the tweet's link to yourself and paste it into the box at the top of your gallery.
How do friends on other computers send their bookmarks to my Snapper?
Make your Snapper reachable from their computers, for example with Tailscale Serve, and start it with a password: SNAPPER_TOKEN=pick-something npm start. Each friend enters your address and that password in the extension's Options. Chrome asks them once to allow the extension to reach your address.
What if a tweet can't be captured?
Tweets that are deleted, from protected accounts, or age-restricted can't be shown publicly, so they appear in the gallery as "Couldn't capture" with a Try again button.
Why isn't it in the Chrome Web Store?
Not yet. For now you load it yourself with Developer mode, which takes about thirty seconds and lets you read every line of the extension's code first.
